1. Give students definition of ekphrasic: a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art. Today we are going to do ekphrasis in reverse; we are going to create art as a commentary on a work of literature.
2. Allow students to get scissors, National Geographic magazines, blue paper, and glue sticks. As the students listen to Hop-Frog, they will create an interpretive picture of the main protagonist/hero/villain, Hop-Frog.
3. Bring out the autobiographical nature of the piece (Poe's beef with over-bearing authority figures-his foster father, his "demon" alcohol, etc.).
4. Allow students time to write on the shared Gothic stories.
