1. Review Q cards and ideas from pink/white handout on Archetypes. Go over the aspects of a classic hero.
2. Joseph Campbell, who wrote The Power of Myth tells us that a hero/heroine is "...someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
3. Remind students that because the heroic quest is an archetype, it is an integral part of our psyche and so is still around today.
4. Begin Beowulf and read through the defeat of Grendel. Is Beowulf a classic hero? How does Beowulf fulfill (or not) the hero's journey?
Collect cards.
