Hook
1. Have students think about what is wrong with sentence.
Take a few answers than reveal what it is.

Parallelism
2. Define parallelism: Parallelism concerns the balance of a sentence, or the similarity of words, phrases, or clauses in a list or series.
3. Show good/bad examples of parallelism
4. Oscar is a master of parallelism. We can learn from the master: show examples
5. I do/We do/You do using the whiteboards. Have students show their work in pairs. Choose pairs to share their favorite with the class. Put them up along the ledge.
6. Parallelism frequently appears in standardized tests (ACT, SAT) and gives your writing that polished feel and sound.

Well Made Play
TIOBE is an example of the classic well made play.
In the plot construction of the well-made play, the action turns on artificial complications that are easily solved by ingenious, improbable solutions. Eventually, the play ends happily and agreeably. A recurrent device that the well-made play employs is the use of letters or papers falling into unintended hands, in order to bring about plot twists and climaxes. The letters must bring about an unexpected reversal of fortune, in which it is often revealed that someone is not who he or she pretends to be. The reversal will allow for a quick dénouement, and a return to order, at which point the curtain falls.

Where are the lost or mislaid papers in this play? Instead of papers it is a baby, but the resolution will be just as improbable.

Reading for Purpose
Remind students that Oscar Wilde, an Irish outsider, is satirizing British class distinctions, society, religion, and marriage. Have them keep watching out for this as we read.

Continue Reading Act II, watching for parallelism and themes.
