a. Members of the feudal system: Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Franklin, Plowman, Miller, Reeve
b. People in religious life: Nun, Monk, Friar, Cleric, Parson, Summoner, Pardoner
c. The rising middle class: Merchant, Sergeant at the Law, Five Tradesmen, Cook, Skipper, Doctor, Wife of Bath, Manciple, Host
2. Go over the seven deadly sins. Do any of the characters we are going to meet have any of these? Have students take brief notes on what the characters are like, in addition to any sins they may appear to have.
3. Have students introduce the character they have studied and display their pictures.
4. Take about how the tales were started. The Knight starts because he is the highest ranking member (even though they “drew lots.”) He tells a Tale of Chivalry. Put the code of Chivalry and Elements of Chivalry up for the students. Tell students the Knight’s Tale, using before and after questions.
5. How does the Knight’s choice of tale and manner of telling relate to what we know about him?
