1. Read Act III.
2. Discuss deus ex machina (literally "god from the machine") is a plot device in which a person or thing appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty. Neoclassical literary criticism took it as a given that one mark of a bad play was the sudden invocation of extraordinary circumstance. Thus, the term "deus ex machina" has come to mean any inferior plot device that expeditiously solves the conflict of a narrative.
3. Why do you think that Wilde uses this device to end the play?
4. Begin watching Act III.
5. Put up Wilde test questions so students can be prepared for test.
