1. Play "Somebody’s Watchin’" while student freewrite on these topics: What would you do if you met the devil? Do you think you would recognize him/her? What would he/she look like?
2. For the early Americans the devil was very real and the subject of many of their thoughts and writings:
3. Read "The Devil and Tom Walker," p 349 in the yellow literature book.
4. Go over scripts. What are the limitations of scripts? How are they different from other types of writing? (dialogue, stage directions, asides, monologues, plot advancement)
5. Work in groups of three to create a script for the encounter between Tom Walker's wife and the devil. We never really get to see what happens—so this is their chance to create.
6. Students will need to prepare to share their scripts with the class on Friday, September 9th.
7. Each student will need to play one part: Tom Walker’s wife, the devil, or the narrator.
