We had a sub today
Background – We just finished reading the second chapter of The Great Gatsby. The often depicted flamboyance of the Jazz Age comes into full swing in Chapter 3. The readers will enter the world of excess: food, drink, dancing, and superficial relationships. This lesson continues looking for information about the characteristics and values of those in Gatsby’s social circle. Please take a moment to read through the sequence of this lesson plan before the class starts!
1. I always start Fridays with 13 minutes of self-selected reading. Write “SSR – 13 Minutes” in big letters on the whiteboard. The students should have something to read, and they should be silently reading it. Give each student a Characterization and Values of the Jazz Age handout (attached) while they are free reading (this is to fill out later in the lesson.)
2. Tell the students that they are now going to enter the world of Gatsby, which is a world of excess of food, drink, dancing, and superficial relationships. It’s party time!
3. Put on the CD of the third chapter of Gatsby and allow students to listen to it as they follow along in their books and while they fill out the Characterization and Values of the Jazz Age handout. Chapter three is approximately 34 minutes long on the CD, so they should finish a little before the end of class. My CD player is under my desk (the desk without the computer monitor on it).
4. Tell the student that I will collect their Characterization and Values of the Jazz Age handout when I get back, so they need to hang on to them.
5. Remind students of the due dates on the board and have them put books away before they leave class.
6. REMIND THEM THAT THERE WILL BE A TEST ON MONDAY ON CHAPTERS 1-3!!!!
