1. Go over self selected reading.
2. Review alliteration, compounding, kenning.
3. Have two groups share their riddles – read kenning lists.
4. Have students listen to “I’m Holding out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler. Talk briefly about the heroic quest archetypes using the Joseph Campbell's hero journey.
5. Joseph Campbell, who wrote The Power of Myth tells us that a hero/heroine is "...someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
6. Remind students that because the heroic quest is an archetype, it is an integral part of our psyche and so is still around today. Divide the class into 8 groups and have them each describe a familiar story, movie, or TV show that fulfills one section of the heroic quest (see journey overhead).
